Medical Surveillance

Medical Surveillance testing is an occupational health and safety requirement for all employees exposed to silica, concrete, asbestos and chemicals. OSHA guidelines require that a health assessment be done within the 30 days prior to worker exposure and must be performed every two years thereafter. These assessments create a baseline health assessment and help identify any lung changes that may occur throughout their employment.

These assessments are recommended for, but not limited to, workers in the following fields:

  • Sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag or recycled crushed concrete sites
  • Commercial or residential demolition or renovations
  • Chemical and biological plants or laboratories

Health Assessments

The assessment includes:

  • Health history information
  • Chest X-ray
  • Lung function test (PFT)
  • Written interpretation and explanation of results by a physician

The employer is responsible for ensuring that an exposed worker has a health assessment conducted at no cost to the worker.
