Insured vs. Uninsured Services

Insured services are services considered “medically necessary” by Alberta Health & Wellness and are therefore paid for by the provincial government through your taxes and health care insurance premiums.

Insured Services typically include:

  • All visits to a physician for medical problems and health maintenance issues
  • Laboratory tests requested by a physician
  • Radiology services (x-ray, ultrasound, etc)

It is important to understand that not all services provided are covered by your provincial health care insurance plan. Some services are considered NOT “medically necessary” by the provincial and federal governments, and are therefore uninsured or de-listed. Patients are therefore obligated to pay for these uninsured services.

If you require clarification regarding the services not covered by your provincial health care insurance plan, please refer to our complete listing of uninsured services below. You may also request a detailed price list from DHC.

DHC recognizes that some patients are simply unable to pay for uninsured services due to financial constraints or personal circumstances. Examples of individuals who cannot afford to pay for uninsured services include: patients typically include the unemployed, people on AISH or social assistance. These patients may complete an Application for Exemption Form for consideration by our Community Support Committee. If approved, patients will receive an exemption from payment. Uninsured Services
